Potty Training/Toilet Training

Knowing the right time to start is not always easy, but our staff have plenty of experience and are here to help you and your child along the way.

It is best to start potty training at home. You are advised not to start potty-training when there are other changes happening, for example moving from a cot to a bed, moving house or about to go on holiday. If they don't want to do it, it is probably your child’s way of telling you they are not ready yet.

When you think your child is interested, please let us know and talk to your child's key worker. We will make sure that we both follow the same routine as it is very important to be consistent at nursery and at home.

The most important thing is that your child can get to a potty or the toilet quickly. Please make sure that your child wears clothes that are easy to remove - no dungarees/jeans. We recommend elastic waisted skirts.

You are advised to have plenty of spare clothes available during potty/toilet training - especially socks and pants. Accidents will happen and this is never a problem.

If you find that your child loses interest, don’t worry this is quite normal. It is best to be totally child led in these circumstances and patience will save the day. Please remember every child is different and timescales will vary, but they all get there in the end.
